Ernagina

St. Gabriel

Ernagina is Saint-Gabriel near Tarascon, a place of the Salyes where four roads met, between Arles, Avignon and Glanum. An inscription found there honours a patron of the boatmen of the Durance and of the utricularii of Ernaginum, a guild named after the skin bags they worked with. Among ancient writers only the Greek geographer Ptolemy names it, but the pilgrim from Bordeaux changed horses here, and the silver cups from Vicarello list it. On the map the road to Avignon leaves it only at a fork and is drawn as two stretches.
