Eporedia

Ivrea

Eporedia is Ivrea in Italy, where the Dora Baltea leaves the mountains. The Romans founded a colony here in 100 BC, at the bidding of the Sibylline Books, as a bulwark against the Alpine Salassi. According to the Roman writer Pliny, the name is Gaulish: the Gauls called good horse-tamers eporediae. The Greek geographer Strabo mentions a slave market here for the conquered peoples of the Alps, Pliny a perfume industry, and in the fifth century a unit of Sarmatian settlers was still stationed in the town. A theatre, an aqueduct and an amphitheatre have been found.
