Epetio

Stobreč

Epetio, now Stobreč near Split in Croatia, was founded by Greeks from the island of Issa, probably in the third century BC, on a sheltered peninsula whose harbour was already in use a century earlier. The map gives the station a small drawing of a hall, which points to the port town in its prime. Mighty walls guarded the narrow neck of land towards Salona. The Greek historian Polybius tells how the Dalmatae attacked it in 158 BC. An early Christian basilica still rose there in the fifth or sixth century, before the town ended with the Avar and Slav invasions.
