Eleusina
Elefsína · Ελευσίνα
Eleusina is Eleusis, today Elefsina in Greece, the sanctuary of Demeter on the bay opposite Salamis, where initiates from the farthest shores, as Cicero put it, came to the Mysteries; its hall of initiation, built by the architect Ictinus, could hold a crowd the size of a theatre's. Yet the map gives it no temple symbol, perhaps because its model dates from after the Mysteries were ended under Theodosius. The map's form of the name later became the everyday one and lives on in Elefsina.
