Eliberre

Auch

Eliberre is Auch, the chief town of the Ausci, which the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela calls a most wealthy city. Its name is Iberian and older than the surname Augusta that the Greek geographer Ptolemy gives it. In the end the tribe's name won: the pilgrim from Bordeaux already knows it as the city of the Ausci, and from that comes the modern Auch. Two roads crossed here, from Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges to Agen and from Eauze to Toulouse. The Roman register of routes writes the name as Climberrum, and some older copies of the map read Cliberre.
