Enna
Listen to the story
Enna, on its steep mountain almost a thousand metres high at the centre of Sicily, was the island's great seat of Demeter and her daughter Persephone, whom legend said Hades carried off from the meadows by nearby Lake Pergusa. In 136 BC the Great Slave War broke out here, led by the slave Eunus, who ruled from Enna as a king until the Romans starved the town out in 132. From the Middle Ages until 1927 the town was called Castrogiovanni.
