Erdonias

Ordona

Listen to the story

Erdonias is Herdoniae, now Ordona, an old Daunian town on the Via Traiana that went over to Hannibal after Cannae. Rome's attempts to win it back failed, and in 210 BC, suspecting its people of plotting with the Romans, Hannibal burned the town and moved its inhabitants to Thurii and Metapontum. It later revived as a modest municipium. On the map the final s is squeezed in beside a river, a sign that the rivers were drawn before the names.
