Iscopolis

Behbit el Hagar

Iscopolis, probably to be read as Iseopolis, is the town of Isis that Pliny calls Isidis oppidum, at Behbit el Hagar in the Nile Delta. The map gives it no road, only a place on an island of the Delta, and on the parchment the name is barely legible. Nearby stood the most important sanctuary of Isis in Lower Egypt, begun under Nectanebo the Second and finished under Ptolemy the Second; colossal heaps of ruins mark the temple, and coins of Trajan bearing the town's name show how widely it was known.
