Buto

Kom Kasir (Miller) · Kom el-Farain (Barrington)

Buto bore an Egyptian name meaning house of the goddess Udo, whose great sanctuary here had an oracle; the Greeks equated her with Leto. In prehistoric times, when Egypt was split into two kingdoms, two neighbouring places here together formed the capital of the north. The site lies at Kom el-Farain in the north-western Delta, beside a lake named after the town. Herodotus says shrews and sparrowhawks, the animals of Udo and of Horus, were buried here, and Pliny knew a special Egyptian linen called Butic linen.
