Caballine
Cavaillon
Caballine is Cavaillon on the Durance, though on the map the letters after the first C can no longer be read, and the name is restored from an early edition. According to the Greek geographer Strabo, travellers crossed the Durance by ferry to reach the town, beyond which began the land of the Cavares. Once dependent on Greek Massalia, it became a Roman colony, as its coins show, governed by a board of four magistrates, and it had its own guild of utricularii, like Ernaginum. On the map the figure onward is squeezed between the name and the edge of the parchment.
