Cabios

Castiglione

Listen to the story

Cabios is Gabii, on the rim of a small crater lake at Castiglione beside the Via Praenestina, once one of the leading cities of Latium; legend said Romulus and Remus were sent here to learn letters and music. The historian Livy tells how the son of King Tarquin won it by treachery, posing as a refugee. By Horace's time it was a byword for an empty village, yet its quarries supplied Rome with a stone thought to resist fire.
