Calacte
Caronia
Listen to the story
Calacte, Kale Akte in Greek, the beautiful shore, was a Sicel town founded in 447 BC on the north coast of Sicily, its remains lying below Caronia; Herodotus already knew this beautiful shore. The map sets it twelve Roman miles from Halaesa and twelve from Agathyrnum, and here the map is right, while a Roman register of routes, which gives twenty-six, is wrong.
