Cale

Calvi

Listen to the story

Cale is Cales, now Calvi Risorta, the chief town of the Ausonians, which the Romans took in 335 BC and settled with Latin colonists. For a long time it was Rome's stronghold in Campania and the seat of the quaestor responsible for the whole south of Italy. Its wine was praised by the poet Horace, and its potters were famous too. A theatre, an amphitheatre and baths survive.
