Calidava

Topalu

Calidava is a slip for Capidava, the Roman fort at Topalu on the Danube in the Dobruja; the name has been explained as the town at the bend of the Danube. Built under Trajan on the site of an older native settlement, it was destroyed by the Goths in the middle of the third century, rebuilt in the fourth and fortified once more at the end of the sixth. Soldiers on police duty and a cavalry unit were stationed there, and an inscription names a local leader as a magistrate of the territory of Capidava.
