Callatis

Mangalia

Callatis is Mangalia on the Romanian Black Sea coast, founded at the end of the sixth century BC by Greeks from Heraclea Pontica. It lived above all from the farmland around it, sided with Athens in the Persian Wars, and resisted the Macedonian kings Philip and Lysimachus, though in vain. In 72 BC the Roman general Lucullus took it during the war against Mithridates, and later it fell under the Dacian king Burebista. In the Middle Ages the name became Pangalia, the root of the modern Mangalia.
