Listen to the story
Cambodunum, now Kempten in the Allgäu, was the chief place of the Estiones and grew under Claudius into a planned town of stone, with a forum, a basilica and baths around a sacred precinct; it may have been the first seat of the governors of Raetia before Augsburg took over. Alamanni raiders destroyed it in the third century, and a late Roman fort rose on the Burghalde hill. The map gives this municipium no picture at all and sends the road from Augsburg to Salzburg through it, a detour of at least 120 kilometres.
