Camuloduno

Colchester

Camvloduno is Camulodunum, today Colchester in Essex, named after the Celtic war god Camulos. It was the royal seat of King Cunobelinus, whose coins bear its name, and in 43 the emperor Claudius himself took it. A few years later Rome founded here its first colony of veterans in Britain, with a temple to the emperor at its heart. In 61 the veterans' arrogance helped provoke the revolt of Queen Boudicca: the unwalled town was burned, and its last defenders held out in the temple until it fell. The later name Colchester comes from the word colonia.
