Road station
Calcaria
Vitrolles?
Calcaria, the lime kilns, was a station on the road from Fos to Marseille round the Étang de Berre. Older research placed it at Calas, with its old lime quarries, where traces of the Roman road still ran towards Septèmes; today Vitrolles is suggested instead. The map's figures here are troubled: thirty-three from Fos is far too many, where the Roman register of routes gives fourteen, about twenty-one kilometres, and the figure onward to Marseille, jammed against the edge of the parchment, cannot be read with confidence. Even the initial C is faint.
