Road station

Burtizo

? Babaeski

Burtizo is a clipped form of Burtudizo, as the Roman register of routes writes it; the Ravenna list has Burtizon. It was a station on the military road from Adrianople to Byzantium, probably at today's Babaeski near the right bank of the Anaçay. Two rulings of 294 preserved in Justinian's law code are dated there, so the imperial court passed through. Justinian later fortified the place, which then belonged to the province of Haemimontus. Older copies of the map misread the name as Burtiho.
