Burgenis
Novi Banovci
Burgenis is Burgenae, today Novi Banovci on the Danube in Serbia, where people had lived since the Neolithic and in Celtic times. Under the Romans it became an important garrison: first a Thracian cohort, then an Alpine one, and in late Roman times horsemen and the commander of a legion. The Pannonian fleet and the army's central brickworks either built here or sent their tiles, a civilian town grew beside the camp, and the soldiers worshipped Jupiter Dolichenus. Coins and small finds reach into Byzantine times.
