Burdenis

Svilengrad

Burdenis is a garbled Burdipta, a Thracian name whose first part may mean wading, as at a ford. The station, at today's Svilengrad, stood on the left bank of the Hebros, by the river crossing that Justinian fortified to guard the bridge; in copying, the map let it slip a little too far up. People lived here from the New Stone Age; walls and pottery of the 2nd to 6th centuries and three Latin inscriptions have been found. Beyond Adrianople the old road to Byzantium, paved with large slabs, can still be traced in many places.
