Brivoduro

Briare

Brivoduro is Briare on the Loire. The name is Celtic and means bridge fort, from briva, bridge, and duron, fort. The Roman register of routes writes Bribodorum, medieval documents Brioderus, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna probably garbles it as Heliodorum. Some older editions of the map misread the name as Bruloduro, and one of them moved the place to Gien. Older research also noticed that the map's figure for the stretch to the next station, Massava, is too small for the real distance.
