Brivisara

Pontoise

Brivisara is Briva Isarae, the Bridge over the Oise, where the road to Paris crossed the river, and the modern name Pontoise, Oise bridge, says exactly the same thing in French. Briva was the Celtic word for a bridge. The river was also called Esia, and from Pontesia came Pontoise. The map runs the two Latin words together, and older copies of it misread the name in several ways.
