Road station

Brenzici

W Komotine

Brenzici, the Brendice of the Roman register of routes, was a station on the Via Egnatia in the area of today's Komotini; its Thracian name may come from a word for deer. Where exactly it lay is disputed. In 2017, rescue digs along the route of a gas pipeline near Arsakeio uncovered a pottery workshop and a cemetery, cautiously linked to the station because of a milestone of the emperor Maximinus found nearby, though the old distances to Traianopolis do not quite fit. On the map the copyist forgot the kink that should mark the stop; the name reads most clearly in the photograph of 1888.
