Borgetomagi

Worms

Borgetomagi is Borbetomagus, today Worms in Germany, the chief town of the Vangiones, at an old crossing point on the Rhine road. Roman troops were stationed here from Augustus to the end of the first century, and afterwards the settlement flourished as the centre of the Vangiones' territory; later it was simply called Vangiones, after its people, while the old name lived on in the medieval Wormatia. Jerome counts it among the towns that fell after a siege shortly before 409; it then passed to the Burgundians, the Huns, the Alamanni and, from 496, the Franks. The map miswrites the name, with a g for a b.
