Listen to the story
Bratananium lay on the Roman road across Upper Bavaria between the Inn and the Lech, and its site is disputed: later research places it at Gauting near Munich, older research on the Isar at Grünwald or Deisenhofen. Here the direct road to Augsburg branched off, but the map leaves it out and sends travellers the long way round by Kempten. A milestone found at Gilching on that direct road counts thirty-one Roman miles, about forty-six kilometres, from Augsburg.
