Thmuis

Tell Timai

Listen to the story

Tmu, standing for the town of Thmuis at Tell Timai, has nearly faded from the map: only traces of letters survive, and older copies read just Tm, perhaps a name shortened for lack of space. The Egyptian name meant new land. The town grew up beside its twin Mendes and by the second century AD had replaced it as the capital of their district. The historian Josephus tells how Roman troops bound for Jerusalem came by boat as far as here and marched on overland, and the Roman historian Ammianus counted it among the most important towns of Egypt.
