Senphu
el Tawileh bei el Korein (Miller)
Senphu has two candidate identities. It was once linked with Thou, a garrison post known from the Book of Exodus as Pithom and called Heroonpolis by the Greeks. Daphnai near Pelusium now seems more likely, with Senphu a garbled form of its Egyptian name. From the 26th dynasty a frontier fortress stood there, manned mostly by Greek mercenaries, and wine jars from Samos and Lesbos show that their descendants drank wine from home. The Lives of the Prophets name the place as the birthplace of Jeremiah, and the medieval Hereford map still marks it as Tafnus.
