Road station
Semnum
am Fluß Sinno, östlich von Rotondella [2 · Pleiades]
Listen to the story
Semnum was the station by the river Sinni, the ancient Siris, east of Rotondella near the Ionian coast of Basilicata; the river's older name, Sinis, already appears in a Greek poem of the Hellenistic age, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna calls the station Scinasium. It lay only four Roman miles, about six kilometres, from Heraclea. Some have tried to equate it with Semuncla further inland, but without good reason.
