Sepinum

Altilia (bei Sepino)

Listen to the story

Sepinum is Saepinum, whose remarkably complete ruins lie at Altilia near Sepino in Molise. The Roman consul Papirius Cursor captured the Samnite town in 293 BC; later its walls, built under Tiberius, enclosed a forum, a temple and a theatre, and cloth fulling was an important trade. Inscriptions name its guilds and cults, among them a college of girl basket-bearers, who carried offerings in religious processions.
