Sera Maior
Listen to the story
Sera Maior, Greater Sera, marks one of the easternmost points on the map, a name standing on its own with no road leading to it. Later research takes it for Chang'an, or another city at the far eastern end of the Silk Road. The geographer Ptolemy knew the land of the Seres and its capital, Sera Metropolis, and the Roman historian Ammianus describes a fertile country with rich cities, reached by merchants along a very long road. The entry probably goes back to sources of the late Hellenistic period.
