Palibotra

Patna (Barrington)

Palibotra is Pataliputra, the city that Chandragupta, whom the Greeks called Sandrakottos, made the capital of the Maurya empire, at modern Patna where the Son meets the Ganges. The Greek envoy Megasthenes described it as eighty stades long and fifteen wide, with sixty-four gates and five hundred and seventy towers, and excavations have partly confirmed his palaces and wooden walls. Indian writers called it the city of flowers. On the map the enormous figures on either side, two hundred and fifty and five hundred miles, seem to have been swapped.
