Cirrabe Indi

Listen to the story

Cirrabe Indi, the Cirrabe Indians, appear on the map twice: once here, and again a short way off in black, with the spelling Cirribe, beneath a mountain range. The geographer Ptolemy names a people called the Cirradae, who are usually placed in Sogdiana, near the sources of the Jaxartes, and whose name suggests an Indian origin. Another reading links them to the Sanskrit Kirata, hill peoples along the Himalaya whom the Greek envoy Megasthenes described and Pliny recorded. On that reading, their descendants may be the Kiranti peoples of Nepal.
