Thimea

oberhalb von Rumelikavağı

Thimea is the Timaea of Dionysius of Byzantium, a very tall tower on a hilltop above the Bosporus near its Black Sea mouth, built to save sailors: at night its torches showed ships the way into the strait. Wreckers on this harbourless coast lit false fires to lure ships astray, and by the 2nd century the tower was already half in ruins. The map misplaces it, for its western shore of the Bosporus is folded to the left, so that Thimea sits beside Sycas instead of north of it, and the European side takes on the shape of the heel of Italy.
