Thapedon

s. Kommentar

Thapedon, known only from this map and the list of places compiled in Ravenna, lay somewhere near the Malian Gulf in Greece, between Phalara and Thermopylae; older research placed it at the crossing of the Spercheios, where remains of a Byzantine town were seen, others near Heraclea Trachinia or at Gorgopotamos. It may have been a customs post on the border between the provinces of Achaia and Macedonia. The map gives twenty-seven miles on either side, and the second figure, about forty kilometres, is far too many for the short way to Thermopylae: probably the first was copied twice.
