Thera

? Ahtopol ? nördlich von Ahtopol ? Sanarite [Miller; bei Barrington unlocated]

Thera lay on the Black Sea coast of Thrace, probably not far from today's Ahtopol, though its exact place is unknown. A Greek description of the coast explains the name: the Hunting Place, also called the Wall of Aulaios, a spot with an anchorage where the lands of Byzantium began. Many identify it with Agathopolis, today's Ahtopol, where traces of settlement go back to the Copper Age; the distances in the old coastal guides point further north. Both figures the map gives on either side are too short. The Ravenna list spells it Tira.
