Tigisi

Taourga

Listen to the story

Tigisi is the ruined town at Taourga in Algeria, on the Roman military road that ran from Sitifis along the coast to Icosium, the Roman Algiers. The Byzantine historian Procopius, who went with Belisarius to fight the Vandals, tells that it stood where Phoenicians had once built a fort, and that by its great spring rose two white columns carved with Phoenician letters. Whether he meant this town or Tingis, Tangier, was long debated; the plentiful spring speaks for Tigisis. In 484 its bishop was driven into exile by the Vandal king Huneric.
