Tilurio

Gardun near Trilj (Croatia)

Tilurio is Tilurium, the Roman fortress on the plateau of Gardun above Trilj in Croatia, guarding the crossing of the river Tilurius, the Cetina. Octavian stationed a legion here in 33 BC, and a Roman register of routes calls the station Ponte Tiluri, at the bridge over the Tilurius: that military bridge was restored under Commodus in 184. Excavations have uncovered barracks, a cistern, a mosaic floor and a stonemason's workshop, along with over a hundred inscriptions. On the map the fortress stands a little away from its river, which is drawn without a name.
