Tindareo

Tindari

Listen to the story

Tindareo is Tyndaris, on its headland above the sea at Tindari, founded in 396 BC by Dionysius of Syracuse for Messenian exiles, who named it after the Tyndaridae, the twin heroes Castor and Pollux. It later joined in the prosecution of the corrupt governor Verres, changed hands in the war between Sextus Pompeius and Octavian, and became a colony of Augustus. The Roman writer Pliny reports that half the town slid into the sea.
