Thora

Tantura

Thora is Dor, called Dora by Greek writers, today's Tantura, a very old harbour town on a small peninsula at the foot of Mount Carmel. The Old Testament makes it a seat of Canaanite kings, and an inscription on the coffin of King Eshmunazar of Sidon records that the Persian king gave it to the Sidonians as a reward for their services in war. Small but strongly fortified, it withstood Antiochus the Great in 219 BC and later Antiochus Sidetes. Its coins under Trajan and Hadrian call it holy, inviolable, self-governing and a naval station.
