Nablus
Listen to the story
Nablus, in the narrow valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, is the Roman city of Neapolis, Greek for the new city. The Jewish historian Josephus and the Roman writer Pliny record an older local name, Mabortha or Mamortha, and the town is generally identified with biblical Shechem. It was a chief centre of Samaritan worship and early had a Christian community. Its road to Jericho has no line drawn, yet the distance figure is split in two, leaving a gap for a line the copyist never added.
