Narona

Listen to the story
Narona rose on a low hill amid marshland in the lower valley of the river Naro, where its ruins lie beside the village of Vid in Croatia. Illyrians settled here first, Greek merchants founded a trading post in the fifth or fourth century BC, and under Caesar it probably became a Roman colony. For a time the Roman government of Illyricum sat here, until neighbouring Salona overtook it. Yet the map draws Narona more elaborately than Salona, a hint of its heyday before the second century. The twenty-two miles given to Ad Turres seem too many; probably twelve were meant.
