Listen to the story
Nemesa is the map's form of Emesa, the city on the Orontes that is today Homs in Syria. Arab princes ruled it as vassals of Rome until it passed under direct Roman rule in the reign of Domitian. Its famous temple of the sun god made its name: Elagabalus served there as high priest before he became emperor, and the city was also the home of the empress Julia Domna and of Severus Alexander. Near the city, in AD 273, Aurelian defeated Zenobia, the queen of Palmyra.
