Nesatio]/Pola

Vizače (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Nesactium or Pola? The map sets a town symbol here but gives it no name, and scholars disagree about which town it marks. Most likely it is Pola, today Pula at the southern tip of Istria, pushed into the place of Parentium by a copyist's slip. The other candidate is Nesactium, near modern Vizače, a town Rome took in 177 BC after a long siege, won by cutting off its water. The geographer Ptolemy called it the last city of Italy. It was probably left off the map, and a figure of six miles still seems to belong to it, though the real distance from Pola is about nine.
