Nicea

İznik · Iznik

Listen to the story

A walled city beside a surprisingly accurate drawing of its lake marks Nicea, modern İznik in Turkey. The picture is slightly smaller than that of Nicomedia, the rival city and imperial residence with which it fought a long contest for first rank in Bithynia. King Lysimachus refounded the town and gave it his wife's name. The Greek geographer Strabo admired its square plan, with streets so straight that all four gates could be seen from a single stone in the gymnasium. In AD 325 the famous church council met here in the imperial palace, with Constantine present.
