Listen to the story
Noviomagi is Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and on the Tabula it forms a junction where four routes meet. The town grew beside a great Roman army camp on the Hunerberg, large enough for two legions, and the tenth legion was later stationed there for over thirty years. The emperor Trajan gave the settlement his family name, Ulpia, and made it the chief town of the Batavians. Centuries later Charlemagne began a palace on the Valkhof hill, so the imperial residence stood on Roman foundations. One distance figure on the map reads three, where six was probably meant.
