Nuceria
Nocera Inferiore
Listen to the story
Nuceria, today Nocera Inferiore in Campania, was the chief town of the Oscan Alfaterni, a people the map itself leaves out. It sided with Rome against Hannibal and paid dearly for it: in 216 BC he took and destroyed the town, and its people were moved to Atella. Rebuilt, it later became a colony of army veterans known as Nuceria Constantia. The Roman historian Tacitus tells of a brawl in AD 59, when people from Nuceria were caught up in a fight at gladiator games in Pompeii, and the eruption of Vesuvius twenty years later struck the town hard.
