City
Nisibi
Nusaybin
Listen to the story
Nisibi is marked twice on the Tabula: once with a pair of towers, and a second time as a bare name without any picture. The city is Nusaybin in Turkey, which the Macedonians had renamed Antioch in Mygdonia. Septimius Severus enlarged it, fortified it heavily and made it the capital of his new province of Mesopotamia, and the Roman historian Ammianus called it the firmest bulwark of the East. When the emperor Jovian ceded it to the Persians, its citizens begged to be left to their fate, trusting in their walls.
