Listen to the story

Nicomedia, today İzmit in Turkey, was founded around 264 BC by King Nicomedes the First as the capital of his Bithynian kingdom, and it carries his name. The Tabula draws it as a walled city, a touch larger than its old rival Nicaea. That rank suits the late Roman age: Diocletian, proclaimed emperor near the city in 284, rebuilt it as his residence, and here in 311 Galerius published the edict that made Christianity a permitted religion. The copy forgets the road lines leaving the city, and a distance figure set close beside it hints at a station that dropped out as well.
