Temple
Templum Herculis
Kandıra
Listen to the story
On this stretch of the Black Sea coast the Tabula confuses two rivers, the Artanes and the Sangarius, and Templum Herculis, the temple of Hercules, the hero of the famous labours, is caught up in the muddle. A small temple marks it, but the road leading to it from Artane survives only as a figure, thirty Roman miles, about forty-four kilometres, its red line apparently forgotten. It probably lay near Kandıra in Turkey. Scholars once took it for the shrine the Argonauts sailed past in the poem of Apollonius of Rhodes, but a temple inland, where the map puts it, cannot be the one they saw from the sea.
